GPL: Wa All Stars remain top after first round

Berekum Chelsea suffered a second home defeat after narrowly losing to spirited Wa All Stars at the Berekum Golden City Park to end the first round of the 2015/16 Ghana Premier League.

An 80th minute goal from in-form striker Richard Arthur, his personal sixth in the on-going league, broke hearts of numerous supporters who were in high hopes before the game at the stadium.

Barely 12 minutes into the game, the visitors had a one-on-one with goalkeeper John Moosie but Richard Arthur’s header was nothing to trouble the goalie.

The current league leader’s lack of respect for opponents and sheer tenacity with a never give-up spirit were in full swing, as they matched the home side neck to neck in the first 30 minutes.

Chelsea controlled the game afterwards, towards the end of the first half. With a minute to end the first department of the game, Osei Bonsu played a neat one-two pass with Sadick Adams who lobbed the ball to Steven Owusu but the resultant shot went inches wide. It ended barren in the first half.

The second half was more entertaining with an end-to-end stuff for a first goal. The tempo of the game rose, as well as the euphoria in the stadium. Chelsea finally lost concentration, succumbing to the pressure from All Stars. It nearly paid off when one of their incessant attacks struck the goal post in the 65th minute.

Chelsea responded very well with equal attacks on the visitors. Against the round-off play, All Stars broke through a counter break to score the first goal of the afternoon, ten minutes to full time. The hosts were left to rue their missed chances in both first and second half, as the game ended 0-1 for the visitors.

All Stars end the first round on top with 28 points. The second round resumes June 26, 2016.
