Pay local players well to perform – Ibrahim Tanko

Ex-Black Stars forward, Ibrahim Tanko, has advised Ghana Premier League clubs to endeavour securing more sponsorship deals as a means of improving player salaries.

Tanko believes in the absence of a minimum wage rate for players in the local league, most top flight clubs have resorted to paying meager salaries to players, resulting in the player exodus to Europe.

After monitoring a series of Ghana league matches, Tanko has hailed the quality of players in the competition and feels the standard of the game can become even better if clubs are able to generate sponsorship to improve player salaries to stop the exodus.

“To be frank there are talents in the Ghana League. When people say the league is bad it is not. Teams must look out for sponsorship and pay the players well and they will get the best from players. Ghana’s league is one of the best in Africa,” he told Starr Sports.

It is understood that the former Cameroon national team assistant who has shown interest in coaching any club in Ghana has been earmarked as one of potential candidates for the almost vacant Asante Kotoko head coach job. Footy-Ghana indeed reliably understands that Tanko will be contacted once the club decides to bypass stand-in coach Michael Osei in search for an outisder for the coaching job of the porcupines.
