GPL Wrap: Hearts stopped, AshGold walloped, Kotoko lead from bottom

Wa All Stars continued their impressive run in their quest for a league title in their 10th year of existence as they ended Accra Hearts of Oak’s unbeaten streak with a 3-1 victory in Accra on Sunday.

The club formed in January 2006 opened the scoring in the 19th minute through Kweku Asuandzie Baffoe who appeared offside but Referee Ernest Baafi and his assistants allowed the goal to stand – a decision which made displeased home fans resort to pelting match officials with missiles as a way of registering their protest.

Richard Arthur doubled the lead for the visitors before substitute Musah Ibrahim pulled one back but Emmanuel Ocran further stretched the advantage for All Stars to end the scores at 3-1.

Wa All Stars now overtake the Phobians at the summit of the Ghana Premier League log on 14 points.

At the Carl Reindorf Park, Liberty Professionals turned on their style Sunday as they thrashed champions AshantiGold 5-1. Liberty got off the mark with two quick goals in 8 minutes through Edward Ebo Mends and Latif Blessing. Midfielder Anthony Yerful pulled one goal back six minutes into second half to give the Miners some hope of a comeback but Blessing returned to stretch the lead to make it 3-1. Simon Zibo and Bernard Arthur both scored in the 70th and 89th minutes respectively to complete an emphatic 5-1 victory over last season’s league winners.

Record league winners Asante Kotoko were sent bottom of the table by Aduana Stars. Their former striker Yahaya Mohammed netted the only goal of the encounter with an easy finish in the 55th minute at the Dormaa Park.

Techiman City played out a 2-2 draw away to New Edubiase at the Len Clay Stadium. James Boadu opened the scoring for Edubiade but the lead was short-lived by Baba Mahama. City then took the lead through Stephen Manu but got pegged back with a minute to full time by Samed Ibrahim.

At the Essipon Stadium, Sekondi Hasaacas secured a 2-1 come from behind victory at home against Berekum Chelsea. Sadick Adams scored the opener – his 4th goal this season before Saliw Babawo and Eric Bekoe each scored to hand the hosts victory.

Lawson Bekui’s 86th minute strike secured full.points for Dreams FC over academy boys WAFA SC at the Dawu Park.

At the T&A Park, Abass Mohammed and Kwesi Donsu scored in either half to hand hosts Medeama a 2-0 victory over Bechem United.

On Saturday, Ebusua Dwarfs thrashed Inter Allies 3-1 at the Robert Mensah Stadium. Nicholas Gyan, Samuel Quayson and Bright Luqman scored for the hosts while Gockel Ahortor scored the consolation goal for the ‘Eleven is To One’ side.
