GOIL splashes GH¢ 960,000 on Hearts, Kotoko in one year sponsorship deals

Ghana Oil Company Limited (GOIL) has launched a GH¢ 480,000 sponsorship deal for each of the country’s two most glamorous football clubs, Accra Hearts of Oak and Kumasi Asante Kotoko.

The deal for the two clubs were officially signed at the GOIL Executive Centre in Cantoments Accra spans for 12 months, subject to renewal.

Speaking at the ceremony Friday morning, Managing Director of GOIL Ghana, Patrick A.K Akorli mentioned that the indigenous oil marketing company which has been competing with multi-nationals since 1974, is committed to the development of local football and is making it manifest beginning with the two top clubs in the country.

“We have been watching the local scene and we realize that this is the time we start making our contribution. We are going to start by helping the traditional giants in the country with the hope that Ghanaians will support us with their purchasing power. If they support us with their purchasing power, what we’ve started today will grow to become very big.”

“We understood that there are 14 other clubs competing out there with these two but you know we can’t carry all the load at the same time. We have to start from somewhere so we decided to start with these two and then hope that it trickles down to the others…”

Announcing the package he said: “… at the end of every month, we will support the clubs with GH¢ 40,000. It is going to run for 12 months so every club is expected to take GH¢ 480,000 from GOIL at the end of the year…”

According to the GOIL Managing Director, the company is more interested in player welfare. This, it is understood the deal entails a GH¢ 33,000 cash component dedicated to player welfare while the remainder comes in products and publicity for both sides.

“The beginning of every mighty river starts very small. So we are assuring them the packages will get better… If you make us big, there will be bigger things… Never forget GOIL, good energy!. “Every liter of GOIL that you buy, is going to benefit us locally…,” Mr. Akorli said.

The GOIL sponsorship comes as a major financial boost for both clubs who clash in a match day 10 fixture of the 2015/16 Ghana Premier League in Accra on Monday May 2, 2016.
