The President of New Edubiase United, Abdul Salam Yakubu has vowed not to involve himself in any campaign that seeks for the welfare of the teams competing in the Ghana Premier League.
The bankroller of the Bekwai-based outfit complained vehemently prior to the commencement of the Ghana Premier League when it became public that last season’s headline sponsors First Capital Plus Bank had suspended their contract, which meant the clubs were going to play in a sponsor-less league.
Abdul Salam’s aim of bringing on board all the other clubs to fight for a common goal didn’t materialize as all the other clubs kept mute though they were cash-strapped.
Salam further made his frustrations known when he threatened to pull out of the Ghana Premier League if the Ghana Football Association fails to get a new sponsor for the top-flight before the third week fixtures because he had no money to finance his team’s operations.
Abdul Salam tells Kumasi-based Nhyira FM in an interview that, he would never talk on issues that concern all the clubs again due to their attitude when he tried to lead a campaign to make sure the GFA gets a new sponsor for the league to lessen the financial burdens of the clubs. According to him he has gone through so many humiliations and disgrace due to his position on the matter.
‘’If GHALCA were to be strong, I would not be the person to lead this campaign. It should have been them. The support of GHALCA to the clubs is insignificant. In fact, GHALCA is powerless,’’
‘’The last thing I will do is to call clubs to come out to express our views on issues bothering clubs. It will never happen again. For now I will come out to talk about my team only. Because I led the campaign I got disgraced and humiliated by some of the clubs,” an embittered Abdul Salam said.
As Footy-GHANA.com revealed last week, the Ghana Football Association has decided to pre-finance all the sixteen clubs. The clubs have therefore received $10,000 each from the football governing body early this week.
‘’Yeah, it’s true the FA has given each club $10,000. I think it will lessen the burdens on us a little bit. At least they have responded to our calls,’’ Abdul Salam confirmed.
