CAF CC: Strand pleased with Medeama’s progression

Medeama SC progressed to the next round of this year’s CAF Confederation Cup following a 2-0 victory at home against Libyan side Al Ittihad at the Sekondi Essipong Stadium on Sunday.

Two first half goals through striker Abass Mohammed was enough to hand Medeama the all-important win, qualifying them on a 2-1 aggregate over the North African outfit. The Libyans had secured a 1-0 victory in the first tie in Tunisia.

Speaking after the game, the head coach of Medeama, Tom Strand lauded the output of his players, noting that the ‘Yellow and Mauves’ were better than their opponents.

‘’It’s a fantastic victory. I don’t have a problem because we won the game. I think we played fantastic football today. I think that we are better than the opponent and that is what makes me happy [and also] to see the players create so many chances.’’

The attackers of the Tarkwa-based club squandered most of the numerous chances they created and the Swede bemoaned the lack of precision on the part of his forwards. According to him, if they had been more purposeful upfront they could have recorded a ‘big’ scoreline on the afternoon.

‘’We were unlucky that we couldn’t score more goals. That is something we need to work on. Apart from that, I’m proud of the players’ performance today.

‘’Yes, that is something we have to work on. I think it’s something that the whole of Ghana have issue with. We have to be effective in front of goal,’’

Al Ittihad scored what they felt was a good goal which was ruled offside by Senegalese referee Daouda Gauye. When Strand was asked about his comment about the disallowed goal, he said:

‘’From my point of view I don’t have any comment. I have to see the replay before I make a comment about that. I can make a comment but can’t really tell the truth unless I watch the tape.’’

Medeama is the only Ghanaian club left in this year’s CAF Inter Club competitions.
