Amos Frimpong blames injuries for Kotoko’s striking woes

Asante Kotoko captain Amos Frimpong has, amidst calls for reinforcement, bemoaned early season injuries to key strikers for the club’s struggles in the three-week-old Ghana Premier League.

Frimpong who missed Sunday’s league game against Medeama with a waist injury is urging the club’s fans to have patience as he believes the club is well stocked with potent strikers.

The request for target men for the side came up from a number of worried supporters on Sunday after the side’s 2-2 draw with Medeama SC at the Baba Yara Stadium. Amos thinks otherwise and faults injuries to players as the cause of their attacking liabilities.

“Well that is their [supporters] observation but when you look at Dauda and Kwame Boateng, hitherto their injuries, we had no problem with striking.

“The only striker available now is Obed Owusu and the task is difficult for only him to bear. Let’s have patience for him for now as we await those recovering and things will get well. We have strikers but you can’t always have everything go as planned in football,” the captain stated.

The injured defender who couldn’t feature on Sunday also spoke on talks that the players decide to disappoint anytime there is a larger crowd present at the stadium for games. He concedes excessive eagerness to meet the crowd’s expectation makes them commit errors that affect the game.

“I don’t agree with such assertions made by people. We work together with our supporters so why should we disappoint them when they turn up in their numbers to support us.

“For me, whenever the turnout is massive, the zeal to deliver for them increases and this ends in committing blunders leading to unexpected results.

“I appeal to them to forgive us and come support us on Wednesday against AshantiGold and subsequent matches in their numbers and we believe things will change,” Amos said.

Any final words to fans ahead of Wednesday’s Ashanti derby?

“I petition our fans to have patience, pray and support the club for we had a good off-season but it’s surprising our two games into the new season have gone bad. All we have to do is continue praying and supporting Asante Kotoko for situations to improve soon,” Amos Frimpong implored the fans.

Amos Frimpong could make an appearance in Wednesday’s regional derby against AshantiGold.
